The Dining Room
Fully re-decorated in Spring 2004, this room now sports a
deep Georgian plum colour to the walls, sparkling white gloss
wood work and a very pale plum ceiling. The whole effect is
to make the fantastic plaster work stand out even more. The
black marble open fire place (working), certainly an original
feature and three very beautiful Georgian windows look out
over the garden. This room is dominated by a recessed alcove
at the far end, which has the most wonderful plaster decoration,
as does the ceiling cornices, there being themed vines and
oak leaves in profusion. It is a feature of the House that
the cornices and window decorations, plus staircase embellishments
are some of the best examples to be found in Ireland.
The representative of The Georgian Society did give an opinion
that at the time this house was built, there were a number
of Master Artisans, some of which were apprenticed to the
famous Fraschati brothers of Dublin, who were active in the
West Cork area at the time. It is more than possible that
these people were responsible for the magnificent plasterwork
at Butlerstown House.
East
Wing
Behind the stairs, there is a corridor into the East Wing,
leading firstly to a games room, adjacent to which is the
laundry room. This is equipped with American-made washer,
electric dryer and a large pot sink. This room is constantly
warm due to the central heating boiler, and serves as a drying
room, having a very large airer which can be hoisted up to
the ceiling. Off this room is another toilet and wash hand
basin.
The Kitchen
The
kitchen is complete with every modern appliance, yet at its
heart is an ever-lit Aga range cooker, which is deceptively
easy and fun to use, and provides useful background heat for
the kitchen. The room has a worktop running along its length,
with a very large American fridge with icemaker at the far
end. Other appliances include dishwasher, food processors,
toaster, Kenwood chef, microwave, coffee grinder, etc. However,
the most appealing feature of this room is the enormous oval
oak table which comfortably seats twelve people! Double doors
lead to an enclosed sunny courtyard with a seating area and
barbeque.
