Within a mile radius of the house, there are two shops:
- Whelton's Food Market at Barryroe (opposite Catholic
Church)
- Barryroe Co-operative Supermarket, Hardware, Creamery,
Agricultural Supplies, Garage and petrol Station, Coal and
Fuel Supplies and Car Wash.
Whelton's Food Market, Barryroe
Open until 10pm - general store and video hire. Out of the
drive and turn left and drive 4 minutes to the big Catholic
Church on your right and immediately in front of you is Whelton's.
This is a mini supermarket run by the Whelton Family. A good
stock of food and perishables, Sunday papers can be collected
outside the shop at 9am. It also stocks a good range of rental
videos. Opening hours are from 7am to 10pm (later in season),
7 days a week.
Barry Roe Co-operative/Complex, Barryroe
Drive past Whelton's Food Store down to a crossroads and turn
left, the Supermarket is on your left. Approximately 3 minutes
by car. A fully equipped modern Supermarket of some 7,000
square feet, comprising food stuffs of every conceivable type;
Bakery, Delicatessen, Dairy, Wines, Home cooked meats and
pastry, Green grocery, Butchery, Toiletries, Hardware, Kitchenware
and on and on, just too much to mention here, they even have
a veterinary section if you just happen to be calving cows!!!
Across
the road is a massive agricultural store stocking everything
from steel to bottled gas, a very good garage should any mishap
befall your vehicle, they are very helpful and will always
manage to aid stranded visitors no matter how busy they are.
A modern filling station with very competitive fuel prices
and a well stocked motorists shop: tyres, batteries etc. Just
beyond is a newly installed car wash, but take your wellies
- you do the washing!
Liselan Post Office
Just
half a mile west from the Barryroe Co-op, and immediately
opposite the burial ground or cemetery, which is on the left,
in the village of Liselan, is a Post Office deserving special
mention. The Post Master's name is John, and although the
shop is tiny, the décor and fittings are better and
more luxurious than many a Main Branch Post Office.
The service is also extraordinary. Being fully computerised,
John can answer any question and perform just about any postal
operation that you can care to mention. Nothing is too much
trouble for John, he has been known to pack and send a parcel
to France for a client of ours, and followed up the destination
to make sure it had arrived safely. He will also have your
films developed and returned to you at Butlerstown or send
them direct to your home.
